7 micro-habits at work that make others advocate for you
A few years ago, I found myself reflecting on a simple but uncomfortable question:
Why do some people get invited into rooms, opportunities, and conversations…even when they’re not the most experienced person or the most qualified there?
And why do others, equally, if not more capable – get overlooked?
It wasn’t a question of intelligence…or even ambition.
Because I’ve worked with incredibly driven, talented women – women who are doing everything “right” on paper.
And yet, something was missing.
Over time, through my work and my own journey, I started to see a pattern.
The people others choose to work with…
Trust, recommend..and advocate for, are not just the most skilled in the room.
They are the ones who know how to show up.
Not in grand, performative ways.
But in small, consistent, deeply human ways.
It’s the truth.
Your career will not just be shaped by what you do.
It will be shaped by how people experience you.
And in a world where everyone is optimizing for performance, speed, and output…
These quieter, almost invisible habits become your real differentiator.
These are not big strategies.
They are micro-habits.
But practiced consciously, over time, they change everything:
How people trust you, how they remember you, and how they choose you.
Here are 7 micro-habits that I deeply believe in:
1. Guard your energy
You don’t have to match the chaos in the room.
When you stay calm, grounded, and kind – especially when things are uncertain – you become someone people naturally anchor to.
2. Celebrate others openly
Be the person who acknowledges effort, not just outcomes.
When you share credit generously, you don’t lose anything. Instead, you build goodwill that quietly compounds over time.
3. Choose growth over ego
Ask for feedback, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Own your mistakes without defensiveness.
There is a quiet strength in humility that people trust.
4. Be reliably present
In a distracted world, presence is rare.
Whether it’s a meeting, a conversation, or a commitment – show up fully.
Consistency builds a kind of trust that no title can replace.
5. Take thoughtful action
Don’t just point out problems – move things forward.
Even small, intentional actions signal leadership.
And over time, people begin to associate you with momentum.
6. Listen more than you speak
Not to respond, but to understand.
When you create space for others, especially quieter voices, you become someone people feel safe around.
7. Lift as you climb
Share what you know.
Make time for others.
Support without keeping score.
Because the most meaningful success is the one that expands beyond you.
None of these require more time.
Or more effort.
But they do require intention.
And if you’re someone navigating a full life – career, family, responsibilities…it’s easy to believe that what will move you forward is doing more.
But often, it’s not more.
It’s more conscious.
So let me leave you with this:
When people think about working with you, what is the experience they associate with your presence?
And what is one micro-habit you will add today…consciously?
With warmth,
Bhavna
