8 Habits for Owning Your Worth

Demi Moore once said:

“You will know the value of your work if you just put down the measuring stick.”

This statement can’t be more true.

So many women I meet measure their worth with external metrics.

The next big milestone, the next promotion, the next moment of praise, or the next nod of approval.

I spent years doing the same in the early stages of my career… until I reached a point where all those achievements felt strangely hollow and deeply unfulfilling.

Some of the most meaningful signs of growth are often invisible: the inner shifts, the quiet courage, the progress no one else sees.

In fact, the more you learn to see it from within, the more powerfully you show up in the world.

So today, I want to share 8 habits that strengthen your sense of self-worth – not through external validation, but through grounded inner alignment.

8 Habits to Own Your Worth without External Validation

1. Begin with Forgiveness

Self-worth can often be compromised by past mistakes, regrets or failures.
Healing from the past frees you to embrace who you are now, without being held back by shame or guilt.

What YOU can do:
Write a letter to your past self, acknowledging that you were doing the best you could with the knowledge and resources you had at the time.

2. Live Your Values

Living authentically is a powerful way to reinforce self-worth.
When you engage in things that matter to you, it reinforces the belief that your time and energy are valuable.

What YOU can do:
Engage in activities that make you feel alive and that align with your core values — pursuing a personal passion, volunteering, mentoring junior team members at work, etc.

3. Challenge Negative Self-Talk

Often, we internalize negative messages from others or from past experiences, and they become deeply ingrained in our beliefs about ourselves. Move from self-criticism to self-compassion.

What YOU can do:
Replace negative self-talk with more supportive and kind thoughts.
For instance, instead of “I’m a failure,” reframe it as:
“I made a mistake, but I can learn from it and grow.”

4. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

The people around you can either uplift or diminish your sense of self-worth. Surround yourself with people who respect you, encourage your growth, and value you for who you are.

What YOU can do:
Avoid toxic relationships that undermine your confidence or make you feel unworthy.
At work, surround yourself with allies, mentors and sponsors who are willing to fight for you in rooms you are not in.

———————-

5. Practice Gratitude for Yourself

Practicing gratitude for your efforts (not just outcomes) helps reinforce the idea that your efforts are valuable, regardless of external rewards or recognition.

What YOU can do:
Develop a habit of self-gratitude.
Reflect on your accomplishments, your resilience, and the things you love about yourself.
At work, keep a running list of all your achievements and the impact your work made.

6. Accept Compliments Gracefully

This can help you gradually internalize that you are worthy of positive recognition and that it’s okay to receive love and admiration.

What YOU can do:
When you receive a compliment, instead of saying “Oh, it’s nothing,” simply say “Thank you,” even if it feels uncomfortable at first.
Use that moment to highlight your strengths or efforts instead:
“Thank you, I worked really hard.”
“Thank you, I enjoy being organized.”

———————-

7. Set Boundaries and Respect Them

Boundaries reinforce the message to yourself that you deserve respect and that your well-being matters.

What YOU can do:
Learn to say no when necessary and protect your time, energy, and emotions.
Use the power of “I don’t…”
“I don’t take work calls after 8pm.”
“I don’t work on weekends.”
“I don’t do back-to-back meetings.”

———————-

8. Shift from External Validation to Self-Validation

Recognize that your worth is intrinsic, not based on others’ opinions or achievements. External praise or rejection can be fleeting, but your true value is constant.

What YOU can do:
Practice self-affirmation.
Affirm your values, daily:
“Today, I practiced kindness by helping a colleague…”
“Today, I was courageous in speaking up…”

———————-

These are simple but profound practices – and when you repeat them often enough, they slowly reshape the way you see yourself, the way you make decisions, and the way you show up in rooms where it truly matters.

So tell me…

Which habit will you start practicing this week to honor your worth from within?
