Megha Mehta: Accessing our Inner Mentor
At Shenomics, we preach and practice mentorship for women. We consider the guidance of the right mentor crucial in achieving our highest aspirations. Often we’re referring to external mentorship, but that’s not the only kind there is; we all possess an inner guidance system, which is powerful beyond measure. A result of our upbringing, experiences, ancestry and life story, our innate wisdom knows us and what’s right for us better than we give it credit for. Call it intuition, instinct, voice of wisdom or gut feeling – the more we tap into it, the more we can truly live and lead from within.
Why is it important to find our inner mentor
So that we are in sync with our own truth. People around us at work and in our personal lives will advise and opine on various situations but their wisdom is coloured by their individual experiences and perspectives. Amid all that noise, how do we discern what is best for us? If we want to create our own path, one that makes us content, sinking into our own truth is the way. The more we tap into our voice of wisdom, the more we reclaim our power to be the women and leaders we wish to be.
What happens when we don’t access our inner mentor
Not getting in touch with our inner guide can show up as a gnawing sense of discontentment. We could be doing the right thing by society, even progressing and succeeding in our lives and careers, but we won’t feel quite at peace. This feeling of unrest and emptiness arises from ignoring our intuition, which is trying to lead us to fulfillment. To put it simply, the discontentment comes from disconnection from ourselves.
To beat it, we overcompensate by attempting to do too much in a given day, or not drawing our boundaries, further leading us to feeling lost and spent. Over time, continuing to shut out our inner voice transforms into physical and mental exhaustion, which could disrupt our work and our relationships.
How to access our inner mentor
> Acknowledging our feelings: Growing up, and even as an adult, we are often told not to think/feel a certain way. When repeated over and over, the guilt or shame of feeling that way gets cemented in our psyche. Not acknowledging our feelings creates the first block to accessing our intuition. The truth is that we always know how we are feeling. When we claim to not know, we’ve already judged ourselves and blocked the feelings – denying them and not allowing them to come to the fore.
> Accepting our feelings without judgement: The only way out of a feeling is through it. For instance, if we are feeling jealous about a colleague, it’s alright to accept how we feel because if we don’t, we are creating a block that will make sure we never get rid of that feeling. The jealousy will linger on and fester. Instead, accept that we are human and are going to feel the full range of human emotions. Not judging our feelings requires us to treat ourselves with love and kindness.
> Remembering that our intuition is always with us: Intuition is not something that only a few enlightened beings can tap into; we can all access our inner guidance any time we want. We tend to forget that there is an easier, more intuitive solution to everything because we get so caught up in our thoughts, logic, stress and worry. Only when we relax, and remember that our inner mentor is there for us, can we access it.
> Getting out of our head and into our body: Our minds are so overfed and over stimulated that our presence is focused on everything cognitive, while the rest of the body is ignored. Bringing awareness to our body is a great tool for shifting our focus away from incessant thoughts and mulling. It’s an incredible outlet for our intuition. Emotions that we don’t fully express get stored in different parts of our body, which when we bring awareness to, lead to an unblocking of energy, which makes it easier to access intuition. There are more than a few ways to get out of our heads – dancing to music, taking a walk, making something with our hands, spending time in nature etc. Stepping away from whatever is consuming us can do wonders by breaking the pattern and stimulating creativity.
> Noticing the ways our intuition speaks to us: Our inner guide is already talking; probably the volume is low or we are too preoccupied to pay attention or we hear what it says and ignore it. We must look out for that voice in everyday decision making – in the small things. By noticing it and bringing more awareness to it, we’ll automatically increase its frequency. The more we listen, the more our intuition speaks to us.
