Path to Leadership for Women: Aspirations, Inspiration and Support

There continues to be a strong need to increase the representation of women leaders.

This became even more evident during the global pandemic, as both political and business women leaders responded effectively to unprecedented challenges with compassion, resilience and a determination to prioritize the well-being of all concerned.

We, at Shenomics

believed this was an important and opportune time to demystify the path to leadership for women, to support more women leaders in mindfully shaping our future and responding to our most pressing challenges in the new normal.

Shenomics has undertaken the research The Path to Leadership for Women: Aspirations, Inspiration and Support, in partnership with XLRI – Jamshedpur.

The research was conducted over 12 months with 350+ women and male professionals using in-depth qualitative and quantitative measures. To get a well-rounded view of what it takes to succeed in the constantly evolving landscape, three sets of leaders were interviewed:

Aspiring
women leaders

To understand their current approach as well as the top challenges they are facing.

Women in
top roles:

To draw key insights and best practices from their successful path to leadership.

Senior
Executives:

To understand what is it that guides their choices while hiring or grooming leaders for top roles.

The comprehensive research gives insights into the aspirations and ambitions of existing and aspiring women leaders, often pursued against the backdrop of competing priorities and an unconducive social construct.

The research also provides actionable measures for individuals and organizations to support women to rise to leadership roles.

The complete research will be released in four parts.

Part 1

A Competency Framework for Women Leaders

A 9-competency framework:

We distilled the insights from our qualitative interviews and quantitative survey into a 9-competency framework that incorporates key professional competencies that can help propel women into leadership roles. These 9 competencies span across three realms:

The Inner realm

Consists of competencies primarily developed through an inner orientation and a focus on the self.

The Outer realm

A set of competencies that require an outward focus on the external environment, and a variety of key stakeholders at the workplace and at home.

The Inter-sectional realm

Where the inner intersects with the outer realm to create a set of competencies that require a combination of focus on the self and a focus on the external environment.
