Dear Friend,

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by all the things that you “should do”?

Most of us have multiple responsibilities and goals that we are juggling at any given point of time.

– You want to excel at work,
– You want to make sure everything at home is well taken care of,
– and it’s important for you to do well with a number of personal goals as well, such as taking care of your health and fitness.

How do you find the motivation, and frankly even the energy, to do all the things that are important, but, and let’s be honest here, that you may not always look forward to doing?

I have been experimenting with a simple shift in language that almost instantly alters your perspective and puts you into a more supportive state of mind.

Here is what you do.

Replace “I have to…” with “I get to…”

Instead of “I have to do my taxes” say “I get to do my taxes”, which then becomes a subtle reminder of how fortunate you are to be earning an income that allows you to pay taxes.

Instead of saying “I have to go to the gym today” say, “I get to go to the gym today” which then reminds you of how lucky you are to be able to have the time, space and resources to be able to focus on your health.

Instead of saying “I have to help my son with his homework” say, “I get to help my son with his homework today.” For me, this reminds me of how precious this phase of his life is. I know there will soon be a time when he won’t need my help as much, and I will miss feeling as needed as I do today.

More than anything, what this phrase does is it puts you into a more expansive state of mind by reframing what might feel like an obligation or a chore as a blessing.

The more we consciously engage moment-by-moment in the process of enriching our life — with our language, our perspective and our actions — the more we consciously choose joy and abundance in our lives.
