Indra Nooyi’s leadership style (and what shaped it)

And now, let me tell you a story about the CEO of Pepsico, Indra Nooyi.

I have often admired her leadership style for being both warm and empathetic, yet firm and direct.

But when she first rose through the ranks at PepsiCo, she constantly battled a fear many women carry:

If I speak plainly and ask for what I need, will they think I’m difficult?
Will I be ‘too much’?
Will I be judged?

Despite her brilliance, she often held back in meetings, softened her opinions, and worried about being labeled aggressive.

And pushed for PepsiCo’s transformation even when it made others uncomfortable.

And the irony?

The more she spoke up, the more respect she earned.
The more she advocated for her vision, the more influence she built.
The more she embraced courage over approval, the higher she rose.

And yet, even with all her strength, she led with profound warmth and empathy.

She is famously known to have written handwritten letters to her employees’ parents – thanking them for raising strong, capable leaders.

Eventually, she became CEO of a Fortune 50 company – not because she tried to be liked…but because she chose to lead with courage, clarity and humanity.
