The Future I’m Working Toward This Women’s Day

I often imagine a conversation that might happen many years from now.

A young girl asks her mother about the past.

And her mother says, almost casually:

“You know, there used to be a day called International Women’s Day.”

The girl pauses.

“Wait… there was a whole day just for women?”

Her face shows confusion.

“Why?”

And the mother explains that once upon a time, the world needed a dedicated day to remind itself that half the population deserved equal opportunity, recognition, and voice.

I live for the day when that conversation feels plausible.

When equality is so deeply woven into the fabric of our workplaces and societies that we no longer need a day to advocate for it.

When fairness is simply…the norm.

But until that day arrives, there is still work to do.

International Women’s Day is not just a celebration.

It’s a checkpoint.

A moment to pause and ask ourselves:

What are we actively doing to create a more equitable world?

Because meaningful change rarely happens through grand declarations.

It happens through everyday behavior.

Through small moments of courage.

Through people who decide to use their voice, influence, and awareness to create space for others.

One of the most powerful ways to accelerate this change is through allyship.

Allyship is not a label.

It’s a practice.

A series of choices we make – in meetings, in decisions, in the quiet moments when no one is watching.

Here are 12 small but powerful ways we can show up as stronger allies to women.

1. Advocate for equal pay and promotions

Sometimes progress begins with a simple question:

“Are we applying the same standards to everyone?”

Transparency creates accountability.

2. Amplify women’s voices

We’ve all seen it happen – a woman begins to share an idea and is interrupted.

A strong ally gently redirects the room:

“Let’s hear her finish.”

3. Sponsor, don’t just mentor

Advice is helpful.

Opportunity is transformational.

Use your influence to nominate women for leadership roles, high-visibility projects, and growth opportunities.

4. Share the stage

Panels, conferences, and leadership forums shape who is seen as an expert.

If you are invited to an all-male panel, ask:

“Could we include a woman voice here?”

Visibility matters.

5. Challenge unconscious bias

Sometimes bias appears in subtle language.

A powerful ally pauses and asks:

“Would we say the same thing if this were a man?”

That question alone can shift a room.

6. Normalize parental leave

When leaders openly take parental leave and talk about it, they remove stigma for others.

Culture shifts through example.

7. Address microaggressions

Dismissive jokes or comments may seem small, but they accumulate.

A thoughtful response can reset the tone:

“Let’s be mindful of how we speak about our colleagues.”

8. Share office housework

Administrative tasks often fall disproportionately on women.

Rotating responsibilities keeps things fair.

9. Advocate for women in leadership

When leadership roles open up, ask a simple question:

“Are we considering a diverse slate of candidates?”

Representation changes outcomes.

10. Ask how you can support

Instead of assuming, ask directly:

“What would meaningful support look like for you?”

Listening is one of the most powerful forms of allyship.

11. Make room at the table

In meetings, notice who speaks the least.

A simple invitation can make a difference:

“I’d love to hear your perspective.”

Inclusion often begins with an invitation.

12. Commit daily

Real change doesn’t happen once a year.

It happens through consistent action.

A simple reflection helps:

“Have I amplified, advocated, or supported inclusion today?”

The truth is this:

International Women’s Day should not be the only time we think about equity.

It should be a reminder.

A reminder that progress is built in everyday moments.

In the choices we make…In the voices we amplify…In the doors we open for others.

Because real change happens when we show up for each other – not just today, but every day of the year.

And if we do this well enough, consistently enough, courageously enough…

Maybe one day that little girl’s question will come true.

“Why did the world ever need a day for women?”

Until then, we keep building.

Together.

IWD “Give to Gain” Month

In the spirit of the International Women’s Day this month, we’ve been inviting senior women leaders to reflect on why #GiveToGain matters to them – and how they are actively creating opportunities, access, and support for other women to rise.

Here’s what some of them have to say:

“I support #GiveToGain by enabling women progress, evolve to their best self and enrich by being there for them.”

– Seetha Rani KP, Head of HR, Philips Innovation Campus

“I support #GiveToGain by ensuring I’m creating equitable and sustainable practices for diverse workgroups so that everyone can thrive and grow in their careers.”

– Anjana Chiramel, Director HR & Inclusion Leader, Schneider Electric

“I support #GiveToGain, encouraging women to break barriers, lead with confidence, and chase bold dreams”

– Sandy Satyan, Head of People Transactions, Novotech

Across these conversations, one thing is clear: creating thriving workplaces requires us to actively offer women greater support, opportunities, and visibility. What is your GivetoGain commitment?

Reply to this email and let me know (I read every single email).

Wishing you a beautiful International Women’s Day Month – may you continue to lead, grow, and shine in your own powerful way.

With warmth,
