Dear Friend,
Choices. Choices. Choices.
Every day we are faced with endless choices.
Should I wake up now or later?
Should I cross off one more thing from my To-Do list or not?
Should I go to the gym or not?
And all our choices over time determine who we ultimately become.
Legend has it at one point Hercules found himself at a fork in the road, with an important choice to be made.
Uncertain which path to take in life, he was confronted by 2 goddesses.
Goddess 1 and Choice 1
The first goddess pushes ahead, and tells Hercules that her friends call her Happiness (or Eudaimonia). Her real name is actually Vice (or Kakia). She promises Hercules a life of pure pleasure and luxury with little to no effort. She tells him if he chooses to follow her, he’ll have it all.
Goddess 2 and Choice 2
The other goddess listens calmly, and then steps forward. She tells him that if he chooses to follow her, his life will be extraordinarily challenging and will demand the best from him. But, with his noble deeds, he will win the favor of the gods, and the respect of his people.
This Goddess was called Arete (the Greek word for excellence or virtue).
All of us face a similar choice.
We can either choose the easy life – and the allure of the easy life filled with pleasures is indeed strong and hard to resist.
OR, we can embrace life’s challenges and use the power of our virtues or values to face these challenges with wisdom, courage and compassion.
The CHOICE is ours to make.
Hercules, of course, chose the PATH of VIRTUE.
Which choice would you make?
Warmly,
