Dear Friend,

Change is HARD.

If you began the year with a long list of goals and changes you wanted to make, and now with 3 months to go before 2023 comes to an end…

are looking at your list, wondering why you haven’t made more progress!?

I want you to know this…

It’s not because you lack will-power or motivation
It’s not because you are procrastinating
It’s not because you are lazy

It’s because you haven’t changed the ONE thing that is foundational to lasting change.

Your IDENTITY.

As James Clear reminds us in Atomic Habits, there are 3 layers to behavior change, each going deeper than the one before…

1.     A change in outcomes
2.     A change in process
3.     A change in IDENTITY

For example, let’s say, you began the year with a goal to show up more online to build your brand…

If you said, by the end of the year, “I will be more visible on platform X by posting 50 times over the course of the year,” that’s a change in outcome.

If you said, “I will devote 60 minutes each week creating content, without any distractions,” that’s a change in process.

Now, the question is, did you also create a shift in identity?

Or, in your head, did you continue to say, “Oh, but I AM an introvert. Showing up online, talking about my work, feels like bragging.”

If you did, you would’ve struggled to make a change.

Instead, if you said, “I AM a thought leader who loves creating value for others in my area of expertise,” now that’s a shift in identity.

One of the strongest forces in human psychology is the need to stay consistent with how you identify yourself. Until you change that, nothing changes.

So, how do you create a shift in identity?

By getting clear on WHO you would have to become to create the results you want so you can have the life you desire.

In other words, don’t create a To-Do list, create a To-Be list.
