Dear Friend,
Imagine you are playing a video game with your friend.
Your friend is told every time they make an error, they will receive an electric shock.
And you are told every time you make an error, there’s a 50/50 percent chance you may or may not receive an electric shock.
Who do you think will be more stressed?
A 2016 study by Archy Berker and colleagues tested this exact same thing and found that those who were told they may receive a shock were significantly more stressed.
When our pain is certain, be it emotional and physical, we find a way to handle it. Our resilience as humans proves we can handle any kind of pain.
What we fear is uncertainty.
What’s stressful is not knowing if I share my ideas, whether I would be ridiculed or not.
What’s stressful is not knowing if I try something new, would it succeed or not.
How then do we deal with uncertainty?
Afterall, you can’t create a life worth living without taking some risks.
Here’s one powerful way – create a set of powerful rituals and routines that you can practice every single day – could be meditation, your daily exercise, or a journaling practice.
This has 2 benefits:
One, our daily rituals and routines become what are call “certainty anchors” which calm the mind.
Two, our daily routines act like shock absorbers – they help you deal with any setbacks if things don’t go your way.
My question to you – what is a powerful daily ritual you are committed to practicing every single day?
Warmly,
