I took my longest break in 10 years, and realized this…

Dear Friend,

I just got back from a 2-week break, the longest break I have taken in almost 10 years. (I’ve always ended up taking multiple shorter breaks than one long break).

What surprised me is…

I thought I would be more energized, but I am not.

I thought I would come back happier, but I did not.

I thought I would enjoy completely switching off from work, but I did not.

Now, don’t get me wrong.

I had some incredible experiences, visiting 2 amazing countries, U.K. and Ireland. The picture below is of Lake Lochness in Scotland, and the stunningly beautiful landscape that surrounds it.

Most of all, I was grateful for the uninterrupted time I had with my family, and loved that we got to make precious new memories together.

If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Then, why am I not more energized?

As I reflect back, I think the reason is this…

There was a time in my life when I simply lived for vacations. The anticipation and excitement of my next vacation is what would help me get through any period of work. And that’s because my work was not as fulfilling as I would have liked.

But, over the last 10 years, I have intentionally and consciously tried to design a life and career that I don’t yearn to escape from.

✨ My work is purposeful, and therefore, it nourishes my spirit just as much or more than staring at a beautiful landscape would.

✨ I have built conscious mini-breaks into every single day, through my habits and rituals, and those routinely energize me. I don’t allow myself to reach a level of burnout that only a longer break can fix.

✨ I try to be present (though I fail often) with my family on a daily basis so we can cherish and savor the many small moments we have together. The big occasions and getaways are just a cherry on top.

And that is why I am not any more energized now than before I went away. And that is a good thing. 😊

I still value a good vacation for the richness of experiences that only travel can bring. But, I don’t need it to fill a void in energy or happiness.

Tell me, how do you stay energized, with or without a vacation?

Warmly,
