Dear Friend,
Our beliefs, conscious or unconscious, drive so much of our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and therefore, also the results of those behaviours and actions.
I remember one thing that would kill my confidence every time was falling into the “comparison trap.”
One minute I’d be feeling good about what I am doing. And the next minute, I would come across a post from someone who is doing better, and it would make me question everything.
“Am I doing enough?”
“Why am I not seeing similar results in my career?”
“Is the universe simply not working in my favour?”
I was, in other words, operating from a scarcity mindset.
When I shared this predicament with a dear mentor of mine, Srikumar Rao, author of “Modern Wisdom Ancient Roots,” he beamed his characteristic gentle smile at me, and gave me this exercise to do –
He said, “Bhavna, for the next 10 days, every single day, I want you to go find and document evidence for the fact that the universe is working in your favour.”
The eager and sincere student that I am, I took him up on the challenge.
And here is what I found over the next 10 days:
Evidence #1: I had been struggling to figure out how I should build my personal brand. And then, I came across a post from another global Leadership Consultant on LinkedIn, whom I find hugely inspiring, that sparked multiple creative ideas for my own brand.
Evidence #2: For many weeks, I would walk past an antique furniture store near my house, looking wistfully at all the gorgeous pieces inside, but I could never find it in me to step inside. I simply couldn’t justify spending that kind of money. And then a few days later, I saw a huge sign plastered across the store: “Everything must go!” Everything in the store had been marked down by at least 50%. I finally walked into the store and bought the console table I’d wanted.
Evidence #3: One of our key clients told us they would have to cancel an upcoming engagement with us because of budget cuts. I was distraught to say the least. However, as fate would have it, the very next day, someone from another organisation, whom I had known and worked with a long time ago, got back in touch with me. Long story short, her organisation signed us up for multiple sessions across the following year.
By the end of 10 days, I could not help but believe that the universe was indeed working in my favour.
Could all of this be a mere coincidence?
Maybe. Maybe not.
Could you equally find evidence that the universe is not working in your favour?
Sure.
You will find evidence for whatever you are looking for. Why not look for evidence for what lifts you up, and helps you move through life with greater confidence and joy?
Albert Einstein famously said, “The most important decision we make is whether we live in a friendly or a hostile universe.”
Every belief is a choice. It is a decision that you make.
Decide that you are going to be on YOUR side.
Decide that you have what it takes to go after your dreams.
Decide that the universe will support you in making it happen.
You get to CHOOSE which beliefs will serve you better. Simply look for or create evidence to support your beliefs.
That is how you re-shape your beliefs.
So, which beliefs are you consciously choosing?
Warmly,
Bhavna Toor
